4 Signs Your Roof Was Poorly Installed

Your roofing system protects your home from various weather conditions on a daily basis. However, constant exposure to the elements will eventually take its toll, resulting in things like missing shingles, roof leaks, excessive granule loss, damaged gutters and other issues. These types of damage oftentimes indicate that your roof is starting to fail.

However, the weather may only be one factor why your roof is starting to give out. Another issue that can make these problems worse is a faulty roof installation. If you suspect that your roof was poorly installed, here are a few signs to help you know for sure:

1. Your roof has missing or damaged shingles. The need to replace a roof is frequently linked to worn, broken or missing shingles. A new roof with such problems is a dead giveaway that the contractor did a poor job installing it. All shingles should be brand new and free of any form of damage.

2. The roofing materials weren’t attached correctly. One of the most typical roofing blunders is using the wrong nail type or not using the proper amount of materials, both of which may eventually lead to damage. This is entirely avoidable, but hiring an inexperienced contractor almost always means that components will be installed incorrectly due to a lack of compliance with local building codes and regulations.

3. Your roof is not uniform. Uniformity is an aesthetic characteristic of a well-installed roofing system. This means the shingles are equally placed across all of your roof’s angles. Also, regardless of style or design, all shingles should match. On most roofs, however, you can detect some inconsistencies and deficiencies just by looking at them. Anything that looks uneven or out of place is an indication of a poor installation job. You can prevent this from happening by working with a reliable roofing company.

4. Your roof has stains on the surface. Stains and streaks usually mean there’s an existing leak on your roof. Check your attic for leaks, and if the leaks are severe enough, they’ll show up on the attic’s surface. It is usually possible to remediate a leak if it is isolated. If you find a lot of stains, it’s a sign that there are more serious problems that need to be addressed, such as replacing the roof decking.

A poorly installed roof is a headache and a source of frustration. If you’ve already had one roof installed incorrectly, get an expert who won’t let that happen again. Prepare to do some research until you find a contractor that will do the job well.
